Girls Talk: The upside of the city

In the last couple of weeks we’ve focused on London – the expense, the loneliness – and admittedly, despite them being very true, they are also the most negative aspects of living in this very cool city. So this week we’re looking at the flip side of the Big Smoke…

    The views
The Shard, Gherkin, London Eye, the Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral, Canary Wharf, the OXO Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square; the list of landmarks you can see around London is vast and varied, and it’s so easy to take them for granted. The trick is not to. We need to see the top of St Paul’s and not think what it means to us – nearly at work, for example – but think how lucky we are to see it everyday.

    The fashions
There’s a reason London has one of the world’s top Fashion Weeks. And that same reason is why we can’t walk down a street without getting style-envy. When cultures come together to merge with a city full of exciting, creative industries the result is bound to be some amazing style and London has nailed it. Even if you can’t pull off the latest Susie Bubble combination, you can enjoy people-watching those who can.

    Everything is in London
Well, aside from reasonable house prices and, if you’re not a native, your support network, everything else is in London. Art? Got it. Shopping? Yep. Culture? Yep. History? Of course. Famous landmarks, both hidden and proudly displayed? Yes. Food from every corner of the globe? Oh yes. There is always something to do in the Big Smoke – as Samuel Johnson said, “when a man [or woman. #justsaying] is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford”.

We can escape quite quickly too!
And if you’re still not convinced that London is the city to be in, then that’s okay, because you can just as easily escape! From Paris (2 hours 15 on the Eurostar) to Brighton (1 hour train journey from London Bridge) and Brussels (40 minutes flight from Gatwick) – even Kent is just a mere 25 minutes away from Charing Cross! So even if you are tired of London, hop on a plane/train/Eurostar and explore what other cities have to offer. Just remember to come back!
