    Time to be Bee-autiful

There is no doubt that bees are pretty clever creatures. They are a vital link in the food chain, pollinating the plants which feed the farm animals. One third of the food we eat would not be available if it weren’t for bees.

To add to the economic value of bees, the harvest from honeybees, provides not only honey but also pollen, wax and propolis which have nutritional, craft, manufacturing, and medical uses.

Beeswax has become a vital ingredient to many beauty products. The honeybees produce this wax to build or repair their honeycombs. The colour of beeswax varies in colour, and is dependent on two things: how much the wax has been filtered and the type of flowers the bees have been foraging on.

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to visit my friend’s beehive and witness the bees busy at work. Once I was suited and booted I went into the hive to see beeswax in its purest form and learnt why it’s such a great ingredient for beauty products. Beeswax is commonly used in a variety of skincare products to improve the condition of the skin. It helps to lock in moisture and contains powerful anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties meaning it is also beneficial for treating skin problems including, acne, eczema and dry skin.

Royal Jelly is a secretion produced by glands of worker honeybees to induce the superior growth and development of the queen bee – it is the principal food of the honeybee queen. Below is a picture of a queen cell, which is where the royal jelly can be found. The secretion contains complex B vitamins, amino acids, minerals and many other ingredients that make it great for anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory, and skin healing.
