We only have TWO Early bird Tickets left so grab yours now before they go here

1.What can we expect from your masterclass?

Skin health tips and tricks to help you to stay beautiful – naturally – with and withoutmake up;

2. Why do you think it is important for women to attend your session?

I think that attendees will truly benefit from the session as there are so many skin issues that us women are dealing with, that it can be a little overwhelming!

With clear and straightforward advice and guidance about our diet, lifestyle and beauty habits, we can all have much better skin, without relying on a full face of make up, or taking desperate and invasive measures!

3. What are the three skincare products that you cannot live without?

I absolutely love the Herbal Recovery Advanced Serum by Jurlique – perfect for delaying the signs of aging and even reduces any fine lines that may have crept up on me!

I also love good old Johnson’s baby lotion! This is a classic beauty staple, which is now paraben free and great for when I need a bit more moisture in colder weather, but without the clogging effect of a thicker face cream!

I love good old raw coconut oil, which works well both on my face and scalp! I particularly like to moisturise my brows with oil, as lotions can be a bit too thick in brow hairs which can, sometimes make them clump together.

4. Do you travel with any skincare products and if so which ones are always in your handbag?
Yes, I have a travel sized bottle of the Serum by Jurlique, and also often carry an EOS natural lip balm around with me; although I’ve recently misplaced the new one I had, so definitely have to get a replacement in this colder weather!
5. It has been said that the foods you eat can have an affect on your skin, what three foods should we make sure we include in our daily diet for that glow?

This is totally true!

I know everyone tends to say drink loads of water, but you can also hydrate skin by including water rich foods such as cucumber, melon and even cauliflower, to get more water inside of the body, and plump up the skin;

Oily fish is rich in essential fatty acids, so helps to give us a smooth and glowy complexion;

Nuts and seeds are also great for our skin, as they are rich in protein, which is great for repairing anything in the body, such as damaged skin cells, but also helps to eliminate hidden/ trapped waste in the colon and excretory system; preventing a sluggish gut and promoting a healthy glow from the inside out!

You can ask Lori all your burning skincare questions and watch her live demo on how to curate a beneficial skincare routine for you at our make-up and skincare masterclass hosted by Smashbox Cosmetics. Tickets start at only £18 and gets your by clicking here

MEET TENISHA WHITE FROM BACK IN EMERGING FILMMAKERS

Seven emerging BME filmmakers from Birmingham will be given the opportunity to develop industry knowledge, professional connections and make a short film as part of a six-month artist development programme called BACK IN.

The dynamic programme, powered by innovative creative agency Punch and curated by talented director and entrepreneur Daniel Alexander will discover and empower the new wave of filmmakers with project support, bootcamps, one-on-one mentoring, masterclasses and peer-to-peer sessions.

The inaugural program will culminate with a screening of the participants’ new shorts that will be premiered, platformed and distributed at the end of the programme in December 2017.

We chat to one of the two females on this programme, Birmingham actress Tenisha White who like Issa Rae and Michaela Cole, has created her own platform to showcase her talent with a short film called Broken. The 31-year-old has featured in shows like Doctors, Shameless and Doctor Who.

So before filming you were into acting, so what made you want to be an actress?

I started acting at 12. What happened was in school we didn’t have a drama teacher. I think he had a mental breakdown because one time we were in lesson and he just ran out the door and that was the end of drama in our school. So my big sister used to take me to a class on two buses out of town. I could see how much she knew I loved it, and was committed to taking me twice a week, so I continued to do it. She’s a brilliant sister and going made it become natural to me. I love it.

What productions can we see you in?

I was a regular nurse in Doctors. I’ve done Shameless and Doctor Who. I did a film with Ray Winstone and Danny Dyer called ‘All in the Game’. Now I specialise in comedy sketches. I would love to act and produce my own comedy sitcom one day. Or just be in one, not even my own just being part of one. I also work with a comedy group that write sketches with me in mind and they give me a chance to do the ones that I’ve written too.

Have you found that more opportunities have come since you’ve been doing these sketches?

Yeah, quite a few comedians in Birmingham will message me and call me to do sketches with them. And I’ve recently joined TCN Management so Kojo Anim is now my manager. He said: ‘I want to push your comedy, I like your drama but I think you’re quite talented when it comes to comedy’, so we’re going to try and push that.

There’s been a lot of talk about the exodus black actors to America. So have you ever thought about going to America to pursue your acting and things?

I want too. I did move to London and a lot of the actors said, why did you move to London, everyone moves to London. We need to try and do things from here, so I moved to London for two years and then I kept coming back to Birmingham for work. My agent said that I get a lot of work in Manchester or Liverpool so moving to London I was getting further away. So I moved back to Birmingham. I’ve trained to do an American accent and now I’m training to do a London one. So, if an opportunity comes to go to America then yes. But I’ve got a child now so it’s a bit different to just pick up and go to America.

What does your child think when she sees mummy on tv?

She gets excited, and she came to watch me do a performance last month. She’s only two, but as soon as I finished she clapped and it’s weird that she knew to clap for me. But she’s a bit of an actress herself so that’s why. She’s naturally got it in her blood.

So you’re now part of a six-month artist development programme for filmmakers called BACK IN. Do you plan to be behind and in front of the camera for it?

As an actor we all have our days where we’re sitting around waiting for our phone to ring. So when your phone does ring and your agents calls saying ‘I’ve got his role for you.’ It might not necessarily be a role that you want but you go in for that audition because you’ve been out the loop for three months.

And bills to pay?

And that’s it yes, and bills to bloody pay. So, I have so many ideas in my head and think this is a role I would like to play and then I thought why not start creating these roles, what are you waiting for? What’s saying you can’t as an actress can’t start making your own roles and creating characters that you want to portray. This programme will give me a great opportunity to expand on what I’ve already done and learn more.

Tell me about your short film?

I came up with this idea, then I called Daniel Alexander and I called an actor and said, ‘how do you feel about this, what do you think about it?’ and they got on board, and within three weeks we shot ‘Broken’. We put it in film festival to share and it’s been selected in five. I had never even filmed in my life, so I’m really proud of that. That’s what’s inspired me to continue.

So, what’s Broken about?

So broken is about domestic violence. A couple are in a very unstable relationship but you can see that there is a lot of love there. There’s lots of twists and turns, I didn’t want it just being straightforward.

So that’s broken, what’s the short you’ll be doing as a part of Back In?

The film I’m doing for the Back In programme is called ‘Spite’ and it’s about a mother who has had her child taken from her, from her ex-partner and she thinks it’s as simple as going and knocking on the door and getting her child back but it’s not. The law says he’s the father, he’s got as much right as having the child as much as the mother. So, she doesn’t know about this law so it’s about her journey to deal with the social services, to deal with the police, to deal with the courts to get her child back.

Leading from the bottom

Recently, leadership ‘Guru’ Simon Sinek made some controversial comments about millennials in the workplace and why they seem to be struggling. Many people have lots to say about Generation Y, such as they are lazy, self entitled, their attitude sucks, they leave the office at 5pm and dont reply to emails at the weekends. The (unfair) list goes on and on. Simon Sinek said

“I know plenty of millennials who’ve gone to their bosses asking for a promotion, but openly saying they only want the title, not a pay-rise. The reason is that many millennials feel the need to show on Facebook and LinkedIn that they’re rising through the ranks quicker than anyone else – seeing a peer get a promotion inevitably creates stress that your career isn’t progressing fast enough”

Now whilst I do agree that social media creates unnecessary pressure and can make you feel insecure about where you are in life and career-I do think the comments about self-entitlement and that millennials are taking the work-life balance thing “too far” is actually an unfair stereotype.

The truth is, millennials are probably the most over qualified generation but the least paid upon entry, the least likely to get a mortgage in their 20s (especially in London with a deposit of £100K needed for a first time buyer in the Capital) they also have smaller pensions and are basically the ones suffering from the effects of the financial crisis that happened in 2008!

I know from our work, that many millennials or recent graduates can become disheartened with their career and their position in their workplace. Some millennials or actually anyone can feel that unless they are part of the Senior Leadership Team at work that they are not “leaders’ or “influential”.

Well, you may be mistaken.

There are many ways that you can actually lead from the “bottom”.

I have been featured in a one page spread in Look Magazine and we have partnered twice with Cosmopolitan magazine (The worlds most popular women’s magazine) Do you know who recommended myself and our organisation to the Editors? The interns!

The interns at these organisations were asked for women’s organisations and blogs that were the best at empowering women in the UK and because their interns had gone to our events and read our blogs they vouched for us! It is truly amazing. What is even more amazing is that the Editor’s trusted them and listened to their recommendations. That is real power and leadership.

So if you feel that you are not in an official position of leadership but have the urge to Boss it up at work. Here are my top tips on how anyone can lead from the bottom upwards.

Know your power!

CEOs, Directors and Managers are busy people who are usually filling up their time with strategy, fighting fires, meeting clients and getting new business. They rarely have the time to know what is trending in their sector or society or to have their fingers on the pulse at all times. This is where you come in…

If you are not at this Senior level, then make it your business to know what is going on in your sector. Take the time to read the news every morning, attend social and networking events, scroll through social media to read the latest news and just make sure you keep up to date with what is hot.

That way you can feel confident in making recommendations and suggestions and you can carve a name for yourself as the go to person for what is current in your sector and scene therefore your organisation is not left behind and keeps their finger on the pulse. I am not saying you don’t have work to do, but your capacity is going to be more than a Senior member of staff so utilise it and most importantly OWN it!

Be flexible

One advantage you may have if you have less responsibility at work or at home is that you can be more flexible when certain emergencies arise at work. These emergencies need a superhero and if that person is you, this will give you more profile, respect and experience.

For example, there may be a last minute client deadline that your leadership team need support with by staying late at work. Or perhaps, they need someone to travel overseas at short notice and you can do this. Or, your Boss was supposed to speak on a panel at an event but is swamped with work but you happen to be free and can replace them instead. If you are able to be flexible and put your hand up for these situations then do it!

Fresh perspective

The great thing about humans, is that each and every single one of us are all different. So when you are new to an organisation, to the workplace or a particular role then the advantage you have is a fresh perspective. So own this instead of being intimidated and self conscious about it. You can actually shape things at your workplace by coming up with new ideas or more efficient ways of doing things which could even potentially save your employer money. Now that is leadership: when you can save the company some coins!

To me leadership is about having influence, and you don’t have to have a fancy title to do that, so you should start leading today wherever you are in the rankings of your workplace.

Five books you need to read this summer

Some of you may be packing right now for your summer get-away trip! (Lucky you) However, even for those of us who are staying at home this summer, it is always a good opportunity to take some time out to read, especially with this lovely weather. Here are our top five summer reads to get your Girl Boss Mojo in check whether you are on the beach or the tube!

What I know for sure: Oprah Winfrey

This book is filled with past diary entries and personal stories from Mama O where she shares her life lessons and wisdom. This book was the catalyst that made our Founder leave her job to work on GTL full time!

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance: Angela Duckworth

For anyone who is going through a difficult time especially the entrepreneurs this book provides findings from decades of research about what sets successful people apart from the rest and that is Grit which is a combination of Passion and Perseverance. This is perfect if you are feeling like you are ready to quit. Do us a favour, don’t until you read this book at least!

The Secret: Rhonda Byrne

This is a classic which we are sure most of our readers have read before, but we feel that you need to re-read this book again! In hard times, we need a reminder to keep the positive energy and vibes at an all time high

Black Privilege: Charlamagne The God

Now, try and ignore the controversial title! This book is not just for black people. This book is for anyone who has been fired multiple times, been written off and may feel like their dreams are too late to achieve. Charlamagne is a successful American DJ and TV presenter who has had an incredible journey to get to his influential place in popular culture. In his autobiographical book, he shares with us his journey and the lessons he has learned along the way.

The Power of Now: Eckhart Tolle

This book is perfect, if you are feeling like ‘When am I going to get my big break?!’ instead Tolle teaches us that the most important thing to do in life is to focus on the present moment!

Five ways to make the most of your Summer!

Summer is officially here, and we are loving the longer days, warm weather and the chance to wear our favourite summer outfits! Summer is such a great season, that comes and goes in a heartbeat, so we want you to make the most of these great vibes, while it lasts!

Continue to develop yourself

Even though the weather is warm and you may be tempted to spend your days sunbathing-think about  the multiple ways that you can improve and develop yourself.  Have a look and see if there are any empowering events such as our Summer Business School this August, which will help you brush up on your personal and professional skills before the autumn work grind begins! This gives you enough time to think about your next steps and to map out how you can nail the next promotion round at work. Take advantage of your time off, and up-skill yourself. Your future self will thank you for it!

Explore

This does not mean that you need to book a luxurious summer holiday abroad. Summer is a great opportunity for you to become a tourist in your own city. There is always somewhere to go and something new to see (often for free)  Try going to a new pop up store in town, or visit your nearest museum. Check out Time Out to find out what is happening in your City.

Outdoor activities

From festivals, sporting events and open air cinemas, there are so many events and activities to keep you occupied this summer. These type of events are always a good way for you to create memories, catch up with a group of old friends, or even a way to make new friends! Check out Ticketmaster to find out what is on this summer.

Quality time

Spend time with friends and family. Summer is usually the time when loved ones celebrate reunions, graduations, weddings and also family cook-outs/BBQ’s. Don’t wait until the Christmas period to spend time with them, do it now.

Get moving

Walk more. Instead of taking a drive or hopping on the bus, make the decision to walk to your destination.  As well as keeping yourself fit, it is always a way for you to get lots of fresh air, bask in the sun and also take in all the sights you’d usually miss driving by. You never know, you could find a new hang out spot in the process!
